It is very difficult for an outsider to rise to the rank of an A-lister in the film industry, and while many continue to dream of a successful career in Bollywood, this Bollywood actor chose to walk away from acting at the peak of her career and embrace a quiet life away from the limelight after marrying an entrepreneur. We are talking about Asin Thottumkal. From making her debut as a teenager in South cinema to becoming one of the biggest stars across Tamil, Telugu and Hindi films, here’s a closer look at journey.
Asin Thottumkal was born in Kochi, Kerala. Her father is a former CBI officer, while her mother is a doctor. She began her career in modelling and featured in a BPL advertisement before making her debut in the Malayalam film Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka (2001) when she was just 16 years old. She became an instant hit in the South with her second film, Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi, a Telugu film released in 2003.

After starring in four to five Telugu films, she moved to the Tamil film industry with Ravi Mohan’s M. Kumaran Son of Mahalakshmi. She went on to deliver hit after hit in Tamil cinema with films like Ghajini, Ullam Ketkumae, Sivakasi, and several others. Asin soon became one of the most sought-after actresses in the South, working with superstars like Suriya, Vikram, Vijay, Ajith Kumar, and more.
After working extensively with South superstars, Asin made her Bollywood debut opposite one of the industry’s biggest stars, Aamir Khan, in the Hindi remake of her Tamil blockbuster Ghajini (2008). The film emerged as a massive box office success and became the first ever Bollywood film to cross Rs 100 crore net domestically. Asin was undoubtedly among the most sought-after actresses of the 2000s.
